I Care A Lot, I Really Do

Since the 2014 film adaptation of Gone Girl, Rosamund Pike was the personification of beauty sprinkled with generous portions of psychopathic tendencies—a Bond girl calibre wife burning your family car because you forgot to put the toilet seat down. So perfect is the association that when I saw the trailer for I Care A Lot, I half-thought it was a sequel.

Fortunately, it’s not. It’s a different domain, a comedic trip full of sharp turns and dark tunnels culminating in a final scene which viewers will either hate or love. Or both. Rosamund Pike’s performance is elevated by wardrobes plucked right out of fashion week. The music doesn’t hurt too.

The story is entertaining but suspended disbelief may fail to stay up in the clouds. I couldn’t bring myself to believe that a taser gun could bring down a gang of thugs—but that was a rarity. The whole movie is a thoughtful character study of a crook whose personality boils down to how she treats a broken tooth. And if you look hard enough, this movie might even be a commentary on the corrupt American health care system. Hurray for the small guy! 3/4 stars.
